KARLŠTEJN & KONOPIŠTĚ
Czech Republic
Two Castles, Two Worlds

Two extraordinary castles. Two completely different worlds. And centuries of European history in one unforgettable day.

Travel from the age of medieval emperors and sacred treasures to the elegant world of an Archduke whose assassination helped ignite the First World War.
[ A PERSONAL INVITATION ]
From the height of medieval imperial power to the end of an era.
We’ll begin at Karlštejn Castle, the magnificent medieval stronghold of Emperor Charles IV — a place created to protect royal treasures, sacred relics and, for a time, the Imperial Crown Jewels.
Discover the extraordinary legacy of Emperor Charles IV and step into the world of medieval Bohemia.
Then we leave the Middle Ages behind and continue to Konopiště, the beloved residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 became one of the defining events leading to the First World War.

I’d love to show you how these two remarkable places connect — and how dramatically Europe changed in the centuries between them.

A NOTE FROM NATALIA
Castles become unforgettable when you understand the people who lived behind their walls.
Rather than overwhelming you with dates and names, I want to connect the stories — the ambitions, marriages, rivalries, beliefs and personal choices that shaped European history.

In one day, we’ll travel from the world of medieval emperors to the final years of the Habsburg Empire.
[ THE EXPERIENCE ]
Two castles. Two eras. One remarkable journey through history.
Our first journey takes us back to the 14th century and the extraordinary world of Emperor Charles IV. Founded in 1348, Karlštejn was built not simply as a royal residence, but as a secure sanctuary for royal treasures, sacred relics and, for a time, the Imperial Crown Jewels.

Several centuries later, Konopiště takes us into an entirely different Europe. Here we enter the world of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and discover the man, family and personal story behind one of the most famous turning points in modern European history.
Karlštejn — power, faith & imperial ambition.
As we explore Karlštejn on the standard historical route, we’ll discover the world of medieval kings and queens, dynastic marriages, religion, court life and imperial ambition. We’ll meet Charles IV not simply as a name from a history book, but as a ruler who understood diplomacy, strategic marriages, faith and politics — and used them to shape his world.
Konopiště — love, power & the road to World War I.
At Konopiště, history becomes deeply personal. We’ll discover Franz Ferdinand’s relationship with Sophie Chotek, the opposition their marriage faced at the Habsburg court, and the family life they created here. Inside the castle, its historic interiors, collections and memories bring us remarkably close to the final years of imperial Europe.
[ MORE THAN SIGHTSEEING ]
From an emperor at the height of his power to an Archduke at the end of an era.
My hope is that you’ll leave seeing these castles not simply as beautiful monuments, but as two very different windows into European history — one shaped by medieval faith and imperial ambition, the other by love, family drama, political tension and a world about to change forever.
